13 Common ACRONYMS & ABBREVIATIONS in English

Improve your English vocabulary! An abbreviation is a shortened or contracted word, like “Dr” instead of “Doctor” or “won’t” instead of “will not”. Now, an acronym is when you take the first letter of each word in a phrase and put them together. For example, FYI stands for “for your information”. We use acronyms and abbreviations frequently in English because we love shortening language. In this English vocabulary lesson, I will teach you 13 acronyms and abbreviations that will be very useful to you in everyday life. You will learn the meaning of BTW, N/A, BRB, IMO, SOP, YTD, ROI, ETA, and more. Most of these are used only in written form, but some can be used in spoken language, too.
