Bingo! What a great lesson Jade. I think it’s a little bit confusing when we have to use infinitives or (to + infinitives) after verbs. Could you help us by giving some tricks you probably know? Either you could make a lesson about this, or not; we all appreciate your time teaching us.
All the best to you!

albertejy

I find it a little bit confusing too. I would like to improve my english skills, do you like to speak on skype? If yes, let me know your id.

juneriver

Hi, I’m french and I come for the 1st time on your web site ! very interesting !
I wonder in this leson why you write the verbs without “to” like …I let Tom go….and why you put TO before look in ”I let them to look !
I made 2 mistakes with that in the quizz !
Thank for youor explication ..
B.R

caillaud

Thank you Jade for the lesson!
I have a question: why in the last sentence there is: “Tom LET Sarah” and not “Tome LETS Sarah”?
Thank you,
Ana

soltysana

Soltys Ana, the sentence in the past simple.

    Denchick

I wonder this answer too. it could be simple past tense sentence. ‘let’ is irregular verb . ıts situation in past is same

    Manolya

No bad to me

Angel W. Diaz

Thanks Jade!!!

Thunder123

thank u

subhasis samal

Thanks Jade for all !
I do have a question. The sentence : “Tom let Sarah leave the office early” is a past sentence, isn’t it ? Otherwise you would write :”Tom lets Sarah leave the office now”, that is ?
Thank you in advance

Marquito

    Hi Marquito,

The Present Simple vs. Past Simple form of those verbs which take the same form in both tenses (e.g. cost – cost, let – let, hit – hit) is easily differentiable in their 3rd person (only), that is, thanks to the “-(e)s” suffix. Compare:
The book cost 100 dollars. (past fact)
The book costs 100 dollars. (present fact)

In a sentence like “I hit him hard.” / “I let her do that.” you need an adverb, e.g. now and again (= from time to time, sometimes), yesterday etc., if there is no other context (the sentence isn’t a part of a narrative such as a story), which would help the listener to work out how the speaker actually meant it – past or present.

Thus, “Tom let Sarah leave the office early.” is a sentence in Past Simple (thus, let has no “-s” suffix in this example).
Your second sentence (unless you are commenting and use short phrases e.g. in sports) should be
“Tom is letting Sarah leave the office early now/today,” where NOW means “at this very moment”, “right now”.

The below examples are also correct:
“Tom lets Sarah leave the office NOW AND AGAIN (= sometimes, occasionally).”
“Tom OFTEN lets Sarah leave the office early.”
“Tom let Sarah leave the office early today,” that is, Sarah already left.

    David

Thank you for your answer David! It’s clear up

      Marquito

This is a very useful lesson! I’ve never known that the word ‘make’ can be used like this before. I really like this lesson:)

vugarpoladov

What nice English lessons are there! I found this site for the first time.I am really surprised that lessons of this good quality are available freely. I am very happy to study english with this site.
I think I mistook the use of causative verbs. I often use the causative verb “make” even when I do not have any authority…I am obviously a biginer about English speaking, so maybe they might forgive me… Thank you very much for a beneficial lesson ,teacher Jade.

Isn’t it

I have John TO clean the windows for me (1st blackboard)

the example I have John clean the windows for me looks like a mistake in which the past particicple is missed…

apdmont@gmail.com

Anyways, how do I say that same sentence in past perfect or past participle?

apdmont@gmail.com

I got 9/9… I still think the example

I have John clean the windows for me (1st blackboard)is odd though (?)

I would have said

I get John to clean the windows for me
OR
I have/ had /have had the windows cleaned by John (for me)

apdmont@gmail.com

I’ve got 8 corect out of 9. It’s good for me. Thanks Jade:-)

viacheslavkr

Thanks, Jade for this class, although it is litte bit confusing. But I got 9 out of 9!!!.

Emmacr

Sorry, teacher, but you are wrong about the structure of active causative. You had confused the agent with object. Actually, in your examples the objects are money and price, instead Tom and them. So, the right structure is: S + CV + agent + verb + object.

DrVictor

9/9. Thanks Jade. Your lessons are absolutely helpful.

I am a Taiwanese English teacher.
(我是一個台灣的英文老師)

The reason why my English is so good in comparsion with most of my fellow Taiwanese is that I have been constantly learning and practicing English.
(我英文能力之所以比其他台灣大多數同胞來得強是因為我不間斷地學習與練習英文)

Hopefully the average Emglish ability level for Taiwanese can improve a lot in the very near future.
(希望台灣的平均英語實力能在不久的將來大大地進步)

I have finished watching this video completely.
(我已經完整地看完了這個影片)

This video is awesome!!!!
(這個影片棒呆了!!!)

It is bloody useful!!
(真是夭壽實用!!!)

Big thanks to the teacher and all the fellow students around the world.
(大大地感謝老師與所有其他國籍的學生)

So is it better to say: “I made my hair cut” or I have my hair cut by the hairdresser”
Because, I’ve already heard with the verb “make”, but, it’s quite confusing, because, I didn’t force the hairdresser to cut my hair, I asked her.

Thanks a bunch for your granted time.
Yours

AurelWeb

Hi Ms. Jade. Could you answer a question?
Can we use this kind of structure in present progressive?
For instance: I’m having my brother wash my car while I watch my favorite team’s match.
Another example: I’m getting John fix my car now.

PD. I liked your explication.
