Could you tell me; where’s the difference between: “somebody SHOULD DO something.” vs. “somebody SHOULD BE DOING something”?

Monday, August 31st 2009Reply to this comment

They are both sentences which give advice, with slightly different intentions. “Somebody should do something” is the simple present, meaning that it’s general advice and that someone should do something, but they are not doing it yet. “Somebody should be doing something” is the present progressive/continuous tense, and advises that someone should be doing something RIGHT NOW. They are both very close in meaning.

Hi Alex,

It my first lesson and it is soooo great, thank you. I didn’t know ‘should’ can be used for avice. Most of Korean students and I are accustomed to using ‘should’ only for duty. For example, ‘You should study hard to go to that school.
Is it common to use for advice? Do people have to understand on context??

I’m not sure if I understand your question.

“I had better go to the dentist soon,” can have the same meaning as “I must go to the dentist soon,” or “I need to go to the dentist soon.”

thank you alex, about this lesson . i learn tow new words ; ouhgt to and had better

Monday, April 11th 2011Reply to this comment

Hi Alex! How we could use “had” in present and future tense.e.g he had better call his mother.

Tuesday, April 12th 2011Reply to this comment

“Had better” is already used in the present, and is advice for the present. Of course, it is impossible to follow advice DIRECTLY at the moment of speaking, so it is actually used for the future too.

“You had better come to class tomorrow” is advice for the future, but it is advice made in the present.

I hope this is not too confusing.

I have had a hot dog before. (in your life, you have eaten a hot dog)

I had had a difficult time in university. (you are telling a story. Maybe you are talking about an old job you had, and mentioning how BEFORE university, you had had a hard time)

hI Teacher, I would like to know when i use should ou ought to? Have expecific situacions when ionly can use ought to?

Thursday, December 1st 2011Reply to this comment

Use it for strong advice. It’s similar to “should.”

    “I’m sick.”
“You ought to stay at home.”

    “My car is busted.”
“You ought to take it to a mechanic.”

Hi sir! I’m really thankful for your lesson. May I have a question for you? I have learned before that “had better” can be used to discuss something that we should do but we did not in the past. Is it true? I used it in that way several times and I was so confused. It’s like I go to work this morning and decided not to bring umbrella, then it’s raining and I’m like “oh, I had better bring an umbrella”. Could you give me an advice for this. I’m looking forward to your reply. Thank you!!

HAD BETTER NOT or YOU’D/HE’D/SHE’D BETTER NOT (in speaking…don’t say “hadn’t better”)

I would like to spend hours daily to milk the information up in engvid: the lessons and quiz are very instructive and practical. I do hope your web site can continue afterwards so that more and more people are benefited. English is a tool to world.
Is there any hint of ‘ past tense ‘ when we use s+ should + v or s+ had better + v ?
If it is possible , please arrange some lessons addressed to some sentences where different tenses used, e.g., You should tidy up your belongs which have been knocking around the floor in the rooms for years if you returned home earlier. Should I use return ( simple present ) here ?

Sunday, March 10th 2013Reply to this comment
