Can we use a semi-colon instead of a colon here?
I feel that “you will understand the culture” can be joined with the preceding sentence by “for”: It helps enormously to visit the U.K., for you will understand the culture.

I mean a semicolon would replace a conjunction. Thus, “for” could be replaced by a semi-colon.
