Rebecca, what’s the difference between ALTHOUGHT and THOUGH???

brunopromano

No difference. In spoken english they generally say ‘though’, but writting they must use ‘although’.

    isadoralmeida

They are basically the same, but there are some small differences in usage.

“Although” is used more often at the beginning of a sentence than the word “though”.

    For example:
Although it was raining, we had the picnic.

The word “though” can be used at the end of a sentence, but “although” cannot.

It was raining hard,. We went ahead with the picnic, though.

In some cases, you can use either word.

All the best to you, Bruno.

    Rebecca

Hi Teacher, I would like to know the meaning of ‘thou’ and how to use it. Can you answer me, please?

I’ve got a question about the quiz. What’s the difference between these two sentences:
Which airline did you travel ______? Air India? Jet Airways?
Have you ever flown _____________ Singapore Airlines? What do you think of them?

Why the prepositions aren’t the same?
Thanks.

bovena

Good question. I’ll wait the answer.

    isadoralmeida

You are very observant. Good for you.

In both of these cases, we could use the prepositions “by” or “on” .

It’s just that in the fist question, you did not have the option to use “on”, so the answer was “by”.

In the second question, you did not have the option to use “by” so the correct answer was “on”.

Very sharp of you to realize that. All the best to you, Bovena.

    Rebecca

This wasn’t clear to me yet .Please could you give for me more information about this I’ll be wait for yor answer god goesa you each day.

      lostdel

        God bless you .sorry

        lostdel

on Singapore Airlines, on Singapore Airlines, on Singapore Airlines, on Singapore Airlines … damn:)

Michal

Dear Rebecca.
Could you please explain me one little thing from your test.
Part of first question: “so we’re going to have to get up really early”.
I can’t understand why both words “going to” and “have to” are used here. “Going to” means “we plan to do snth”. Ann “have to” means “we are forced by circumstances to do smth”. Why do you use this phrases together?
Thanks a lot in advance!

Nikolay

We use both sometimes because there is something we are going to do because we have to do it, not because we necessarily want to do it or choose to do it. In the example above, there are two facts: we are going to get up early and we have to get up early. We are simply emphasizing the fact that both these situations exist -we are going to get up early because we have to get up early, not otherwise.

Hope this helps! My best wishes to you, Nikolay.

    Rebecca

You make the things easy thanks teacher.

Thanks teacher…. But I have bit confusion regarding “arrive, reach” do we use preposition after these words?

Jibi

    Let’s look at some examples:

We arrived at the airport on time.
    We arrived in London yesterday.
    We arrived on time.
    We arrived home late.

The last one is an exception, because we are talking about home, but in all other cases we do need to use a preposition with the verb “arrive”.

Now, let’s look at the verb “reach”.

What time did you reach the pharmacy?
    When will we reach London?
He reached the church in time for the wedding.
    We reached home safely.

As you can see, we do not need a preposition with the verb “reach” when we are talking about reach to mean arrive.

However, there are some phrasal verbs using the word “reach” which do need a preposition. For example,

I reached for the soap, but it slipped from my hand.

The fireman reached out to help the young boy escape from the building.

So you see,the usage depends on the meaning!

My best wishes to you, Jibi and thanks for the good question.

    Rebecca

Thanx a lot, it help me a lot

thanks for your Nice teaching… And but i have more difficulties about these…! I have to, I had to , I have been , I had been, I have being , I had being……… thnks.

Jamil Rasa

Well, we cannot say the following:

    I have being…
    I had being…

You can only use the first two, I have been or I had been.

    For example,

I have been to London many times in my life.

I had been to London on my last visit.

Please check the grammar lessons on our website for some more help with these perfect tenses.

My best wishes to you, Jamil.

Mohammed Bahidrah

Rebecca, thank you very much for easy and really understandable explanation. It really helps.
I have a question right here.
What doest this sentence mean: “we’re going to have to get up early” I didn’t quite understand why w4e need to add :have to” I used to say be going to – to underline my intention. Or “have to “ – to underline the necessity to do smth. Why do we need so complicated structure?
And one more question: according to your lesson – the preposition “on” is to be used when we say about airline carrier, but why then in the quiz sentence #4 (which airline did you travel by?) we use the preposition by and why in then in the 6th sentence we use on? ( 6-have you ever flown on Singapore airlines?)
I’d really appreciate your kind reply and explanation as well.
All the best and thank you in advance.

Hello Rebecca! You probably tired of thousands of questions, suggestions and all that stuff. But I`ll take a risk and ask you too.))) I know that word “Though” has a different minings (at least my dictionary gives me 5 to 7 interpretations). I hear this word many times a day in people`s conversations. And every time trying to translate it on my native language (Russian) I get different results (meanings). That`s why I get confused pretty often. Is it worth to do a lesson about this word and its usage? How do you think? Looking forward to get your reply. Best regards. Natalie.
