Can I use idioms in both spoken and written English? I mean my academic writing?
I’ve already made a research but their use is higly controversial.

Yes you can use idioms in both forms of communication. You just need to get to know which idioms are more slang and therefore not suitable for academic writing.
For example, “break a leg” or “steal someone’s thunder” is not commonly used in formal writing, but “behind the scenes” is a common expression even in formal academic writing.
