Emma, you taught me some useful things that I can use it on my daily life.I can’t not thank you for that.I have a doubt. Is there a word like “MANAGERESS”, if we are talking about a lady manager.

deepu

    Hi Deepu,

    can we pracice english

    mozo

      Can we practice English?

      Andrey Alferov

Very important topic. Nowadays, it’s very important to watch out for the language that we use, especially this gender issue. With time, people are getting more polite & more sensible, so the language that we use must take that into account.

Abdullah

I agree with you Abdullah! Thank you for your comment!

adelalcebai

cleaning lady – office cleaner
headmaster – director
foreman – supervisor

adelalcebai

cleaning lady is a general term

headmaster is no director, Direcor’s defenition can be seen in Law Books.

Foreman and Supervisor is different, Supervisor is the designation just above foreman and supervisor is responsible for all works, but foreman is responsible for a small part of work only.

    bijug

      sorry, director’s

      bijug

foreman is not the same that supervisor, is not it?

Medo

A good manager knows its staff.
This should be alright, we all are nothing but things… “Man/Women/Person/Human” kind are so arrogant…

Ruben

Hahaha….I must say a witty remark :) Excellent!

    I don’t like arrogant people-things too.

But don’t despise humanity as a whole. There are many good people among us.

    sasha11

i don´t know how to say this…

“Someone(he or she) needs help. They(he or she) are crying inside the cave.”
but i know that there is only 1 person there. What will be the correct form?
sorry my english, i´m not advanced in english. Thanks.

hkh

    Hi hkh,

Thank you for your question. For your example sentence, you have a choice between “he or she” and “they”. In more formal writing, you should use ‘he or she’ even though this is a little long and awkward. In less formal writing or conversation, you can use ‘they’. The majority of English speakers use ‘they’ although it technically isn’t grammatically correct.

Here is how I would write your example: Someone needs help. They are crying inside the cave.

    Emma

There is no enough words to express my gratefull feelings to you for this service and asked God to bless you.
Is there are such way to have alive chat with your staff to practice English lively please?

Hi
I like this lesson because i could learn some good way to not refer always to a man when we really mean man and woman. so, that was interesting , and thanks a lot

ronny

Hi,
Thank you for this lesson.I’ve question.
In this topic you said “Man has always been driven by his desire for happiness” and than you changed the sentences “People have always been driven by their desire for happines”.So, I want to know why the first sentences you used “Has”? Isn’t “man” plural? And why you used “his” in first sentences? The word “man” is general, like people”.
I’m sorry for my long questions :)

terane

Hi Emma, thank you for your lesson. Maybe we could find a way to do the same lesson in others languages… When I speak French or Italian I often feel to be, as you said, in the 1950’s!!! There are some jobs that I even don’t know how to say when they are done by women!!! There is still a long way to go…

milly

Hi Milly, yeah, what you say is so true . Here in Italy you can still hear people (both males and females) talking about their female boss using gender excluding terms as “il mio capo si chiama LAura”, o il mio dottore si chiama Chiara”. I think that’s unacceptable.
Thanks Emma for this lesson. It’s a great lesson about avoiding sexism….

conakry

Hi, Emma. Thanks for the wonderful lesson. I wanna ask you about one interesting word – history – is it related with the phrase “his story”, can we regard it as a sexism? if yes, so how to avoid it?

forgetmenot

“History” comes from the ancient Greek word istoria, which means “inquiry”. So, no, it’s not related to the English. However, in the 1960’s, feminist writers coined the term “herstory” to talk about history from women’s perspectives, which is a play on the “his” part.

Hi Emma ! )This lesson is in razlele “1-Beginner” but it is not. Because: 1) Your speech is too fast (that would be able to understand its beginning); 2) an explanation difficult to understand because there examples that Tolna in words and not, unfortunately, illustrative drawings and so forth …. Although, as a woman you really like me Emma 10/10, but as a teacher 8/10. And I appreciate that lesson on 5/10.

AbdoK

Thanks Emma. This is a great lesson.
You talk about “police officers” on the video, so I’d like to ask you what’s the difference between “police officer” and “cop”? I think that the first option is a formal way of saying it, and that the second option is informal, but I’m not sure. And also, can we say “cop” for women or it is only for men?

Camila

In conclusion, what we use the plural like they, their is the best expression rather better than singular to avoid sexism.
Right?

Hi Emma, thanks for the video
for me at the first approach it looked strange and ridiculous, in my country a fireman is still a fireman and I don’t think it is a problem for anybody….

Hello,

I need to ask. In a work context, when there is a situation in which the supervisor ask the staff to clean and tidy the work place or whatever and your male workmate ignore the supervisor’s demand assuming that it’s just women that should clean….what’s a polite way to answer to expressions like: “women clean much better than men”? or “you look very sexy with that broom”?

Thanks.

TZ ZT

Thanks a lot, Emma.

Wow, amazing. Thank you very much Emma for this lesson. This lesson is so interesting for me. Before this time, I always confused about this problem. How to be not sexism when we talk/write a sentence with general person: male or female? That is so confused. But when I get your teaching here, I am able to understand and hope that I am not going to make this mistake again… Thank you Emma… God bless you.
