i dint get your lecture at all. i got confused
because, you wrot a sentence in simple present and than u made it inot passive and you used ” was and were”
but when i took lecture on the same topic, i was taught that we use “is am are” to make passive of simple present, it it so han why did you used “was were”
would you like to help me out.

I think both are correct, Mahvish. It is the verb “TO BE”… that can be was, were, is, am, are… all can be used in a passive sentence. Look at my example:

“The story was written.” — PASSIVE
“The story was written by Paul.” — ALSO PASSIVE
“The story is written.” — PASSIVE (I think)

“Paul wrote the story” — ACTIVE

Hi teacher
Very interesting. Lesson was done very clear by you. Tell me please if my idea is correct. The passive voice is used when the action of the verb affects to the subject, instead, in the active voice, the verb affects to the object.

Thank you

Raul

I think is too redundant if you say “by you” because the video was actually made by her. Sometimes they might think that she’s the only one that can make the video so easy to understand.

*In this case, “make” is used and not “do” when talking about “making a video”
*If you didn’t happen to understand my explanation, analize what you wrote and I’m sure you’ll figure out.

    Cheers,

I agree to what Mahvish said. I was also taught that when using present simple in active, stays the same in passive.

According to the example the teacher gave:

I eat lunch (active)

Lunch is eaten (and not “was eaten”) (Passive)

Did she get confused? Or someone can help me out with this?

Thanks.

You are correct, we can use passive in ALL verb tenses — past, present, future, etc. But we usually use the simple past when we talk about the actions we did: “My hair was cut”. We use the present tense — “Hair is cut”, when we talk about everyday routines — which we don’t use a lot in regular, natural conversations. Remember, I am teaching you how to speak NATURALLY — not how your text books teach you! We usually DON’T use the present passive.
    Thanks for watching!

      what is adverb

Thursday, July 23rd 2009Reply to this comment

Simpely,an adverb is a word that describes a verb for example we say: ” Jack drives his car QUICKLY” here the word quickly is an adverb which describes how Jack was driving his car,so it has to do with the verb”to drive”.that all my friend!

your lesson is good , but you didnt say the defferent between ( my hair was cut) and ( I had my hair cut ) which is better than I was my hair cut .
Also as my freinds said the defferent between present and past when we change into passive . I hop you make another lesson to show the defferent betweem them ( present and past)

Saturday, February 19th 2011Reply to this comment

Dear Ronnie,
You really do a very nice job, but I still would like to comment on two things…
1. I eat lunch – is in present tense
Lunch was eaten – is in past tense.
2. When you explain I – is subject
eat – is verb
lunch – is noun
If I take “I” as a subject, than I would say that “lunch” is object. (lunch is noun and I is pronoun)
Sincerely, Ediz (a German teacher)

Yes you can use the verb in the present tense! I made a mistake! But it is more natural to use the past when we talk about a hair cut.

Wednesday, May 4th 2011Reply to this comment

Sorry to bother you, buti think that when we use the passive’you conjugate verb to BE in the tense of the Active tense. for example : I eat lunch. so you said that,’Lunch was eaten.
And i think that the passive could be , Lunch is eatten. Because I eat lunch is in the simple present.
so i need to correct me that.

You are so wonderful teacher.

thank you so much.

Hi Ronnie,
How can I change this sentence into active voice “I AM PAID IN DOLLARS” and what it means?

Tuesday, May 17th 2011Reply to this comment

I am paid in dollars means they pay you with cash – in dollars means with a currency that uses dollars (not pounds or pesos)
Passive – Dollars are paid to me.

Tuesday, May 17th 2011Reply to this comment

Hello Ronnie. I like your lessons and appreciate your way of teaching. I also support the idea that English language should be taught naturally. Anyway, I have one observation which I want to share with you. Navin asked you a question about how to change the sentence “I am paid in dollars” into active voice and what it means. You answered that the passive sentence is “Dollars are paid to me”. I am not a native speaker and I am preparing for the TOEFL test which means that I am not competent to say if this is right or wrong, but if you observe the sentence grammatically I think that you will notice the same mistake. I’ll try to explain what I have observed. If we agree that “paid” is a past form of the verb “pay” and that “in dollars” is a prepositional phrase and if we include the subject who is performing the action “paying” (e.g. by my Boss) then the complete sentence would look like this “I am paid in dollars by my boss” where “by my boss” will be the object. If this is correct then the active voice form would be “The boss pays me in dollars”. If we suppose that “Someone’ is the hidden subject in your sentence “Dollars are paid to me” then the sentence would be “Someone pays dollars to me” which is not the same as Navin stated. To resume, passive “I am paid in dollars” – active “Someone pays me in dollars”; passive “Dollars are paid to me” – active “Someone pays me dollars”. I would like to know your opinion about this observation.

according to the answer that she gave to the first active sentence ( i eat lunch ) is not suitable coz it is in the present but the answer was in the past .so the answer should be like this: lunch is eaten or the active sentence should be like this : i ate lunch

Dear Ronnie,
It’s a pleasure for me to watch lessons from you, the way you teach is nice, cool, not boring.
Ronnie i have a question about the connection, difference between “intransitive verb” and “passive voice”. I’ve ever read but still get confused till now, for example: “the hospital/ the play closed” but another example i read,it uses to be: “the road Was closed, the museum has Been closed” what’s the difference between them?? between using and not using to be as they have ‘same verb’.
And also another example:”the boat steamed across the lake” how if it comes to future simple, it will be “the boat will steam…” or “the boat will be steamed…”??
I need your answer Ronnie and i hope that will be really useful to me, because i’m still completely confused of that :(

Thanks so much before:)

Thursday, December 22nd 2011Reply to this comment

The road was closed is past passive.
The road has been closed is present perfect passive.
Future simple of ”the boat steamed across the lake” = “the boat will steam”.
