“I am going to go home.” or “I am going home.”? What is the difference between the future “to be going to” and the present continuous? You MUST use a base verb in one of the tenses! Does this sound confusing? It’s pretty simple, so watch this important grammar lesson to learn the answer.
I’m still a little bit confused but we have one collective feature and that is the laziness ;)

Dear teacher, about question number 6, I had doubts about the expression ‘most times’. For me, it seems ‘not all the time’. I got a little bit confused, can you please explain this grammar aspect to me? Thank you a lot, you are the best and the funniest teacher I have ever had.
Fabio Daniel Soave
Me too
dougss
Question can put doubt. Later you’ll make a mistake, I guess.
abel1990
The ending ing is not used in stative verbs. For example, I want, need, understand, etc.

André
The last question was funniest than others …I couldn’t stop my laughing … :))
hrv84
¡yeahhh! i got 90, that means that im not too bad, well i guess jajaja
jeyson
I think there is a problem with the 9th question.
carlos77
why do you think so?. The correct option is I’m going to go home tomorrow.
diegohqm
Yes. There is a problem with 9th question. Because the correct option is “I going to go home tomorrow – Yes, this sentence is correct”, but it the quiz correct answer is “NO”. So, my question is WHY?
Pavlon
Hi Pavlon and carlos77, because the sentence need the verb to be, in this case say:
“I going to go home tomorrow.” and the right answer must be “I am (i’m) going to go home tomorrow”, so, this is the difference.
Natas
you got it! :)
RoseD
hELLO,
I made the same mistake, I did not pay attention to the “I am”.
Thank you Ronnie it was very simple and useful :)
Assia GOURRAME
Good evening Ronnie
Thanks for this class, really was a very confusion to me about the present continuous grammar.
anselmo
Oi anselmo.
Acho que em inglês, a palavra classe nesse caso se traduz em “lesson”.
“Class” significa classe de aula somente.
Se vc quizer trocar umas ideias sobre o Inglês eu estarei encantado em ajudar.
carlos77
Exactly Carlos
Thank you very much.
I am pleasure for your help.
anselmo
Anselmo,
I am thankful for your help.
anselmo
Oi ! Como vai vc ?
I still believe that the correct word in Anselmo’s sentence should be “lesson” instead of class because in several forums and dictionaries they talk about a difference in the usage of these two words. Furthermore, you’ll notice that all teachers references to other “lessons” not other “classes” in Engvid. In addition you’ll find on top of ENGVID’s website a tab called All lessons and not All classes.
I think that we can use the word class to talk about a set of people taking a lesson.
See u.
carlos77
Oi carlos, eu gostaria de trocar idéias a respeito das lições. Meu e-mail é ccvcruz@terra.com.br
Hi Carlos
Carlos, voce corrigiu o Anselmo totalmente errado o que voce disse.
A palavra “class” nao significa somente a sala de aula, o Anselmo estava corretissimo. Ele poderia usar tanto “class” como “lesson” no comentario dele.
lisa28
thanks so much, for such a helpful lesson

Hi dear MS Ronnie,
I believe we smell something ,and not smelling.
Am I correct ?
I’m talking about minute 2:55 in the video.
sky2464
can or can’t?!
ready4english
In speaking that sentence correct to speak about future action..in writing its not correct we need to put base verb like “..to go shopping.”..and always follow “V1” after “to”…
retard
this is basic( to + base verb )

I asked once a native English teacher — “What is the difference between present perfect and present perfect continuous?” Two short examples.
I have lived in Minnesota for 10 years.
I’ve been living in Minnesota for 10 years.
He answered me:
“They’re both okay, but continuous tenses often sound more relaxed, more natural.” And that Americans prefer the second one when there is an action.

Thanks for your kind reply..i would like to keep in touch with you..could u please give me your facebook account? so we can solve our doubts..

Can you please tell us what the differences are between “to be + going to + base verb” and “will”, to express the future?? I’m kind of confusing, to express the future (I always used “will” – ex : I will go home).
Also, what is exactly a base verb please? is it the infinitive form from all the verbs?
If I want to say “I will improve my English”, can I write “I’m going to improve my English”?
Thank you in advance Ronnie!!
V.
Yes, the base verb is also called the infinitive. Check out the video on will vs. going to!!!

HassanMohamed@mail.ru
(to) “be going to” is basically a semi-modal verb. (which is why we use a base verb after it. There is no such thing as a future tense in English, though we do use modals like “will” and “be going to” to express future meaning.
also, in the Quiz: “Most times, when you have a verb in the continuous, it has an “ing” ending.” — It isn’t “most times” but every time.

Hi Ronnie! Please, tell me why uses passive voice with the following sentences
I am not interested in politics
He was surprised at her sudden disappearing
Thank you!

I think it’s not passive. “interested” and “surprised” are adjectives. And it’s like: (It is rainy. It was snowy.) Present and Past Simple. May be I am wrong :)

Thanks Leonid!
Sentences are written right. I saw sentences in english book

Hi Ronnie, I have a question: I thought when we talk about Future we can use: will; to be going to; OR present continuous; but Present Continuous is the strongest form. For example:
I will eat supper with him tonight.
I am going to eat supper with him tonight.
I am eating supper with him tonight.
Is it right ?

Dear Ronnie,
First, I would like to thank you for this lesson.
I’ve one question – why did you classify this topic as advanced level? I think it should be for beginner.
Shay
Dear Ronnie,
I’m Mostapha from Algeria. I’ve seen lots of videos made by you on youtube and never checked the source. Now, I do see this remarkably outstanding website where I can find all your and your colleagues’ amazing videos. I hope that you give them my sincere regards.
About this video, I was going to going to watchchch it, but I’ve been of two minds so I decided to take the quiz first. “I was about to do it, I’m going to do it, I’ll do it right away, I’m doing it, I’ve already finished doing it hhhhhhhhh, hey I’ve done it” ..
Best of love to all the team. Thanks a lot

Frankly speaking it is a bit confusing for me. Yea its true that sentenses patterned on “I am going to go home.” is for the purpose of saying something about future but according to classical English grammar it doesn’t fit into any of the four (sub-)types of future tense like future indefinite, future continuous, future perfect or future perfect continuous tense. I am confused where to put sentense “I am going to go home.” according to classical type of sentenses. Can any help in this regard to remove the confusion?
Shoukat Yaseen Khan
sorry for second last line “classical type of tenses” and “Can anyone…”

Hello guys. Someone can teach my english grammar and also my pronunciation. Here’s my skype account rosehint87.
Rose
what is a verb?
sushmapinku
but also the present continuous can express the future or not ??
himbra
Hi Ronnie,
in this video you are saying the present continous is used for actions which are happening right now. Isn’t there a future tense which is similar to the present continous, i think it’s used for actions or events in the future which are planned AND arranged.
e.g.: I am having a job interview tomorrow at 3 p.m..
If i am right i think this should also be in this video or in any other video. I haven’t found anything about this tense here.
istalantar
thank u..
im going to my bed

Hi Ronny,
If sentence 9 in your quiz is incorrect, then sentence 8 is incorrect, too. As far as I know, grammarians who overemphasize the normative aspect of the language would recommend that we avoid the use of the verb “go” with a “be going to” construction. So instead of saying “I am going to go to the mall”, we would rather say “I will go to mall” or ” I am going to the mall”. Also, you could have highlighted some differences in the communicative value between the present continuous and the “Be going to” form as they are used to refer to the future.
e.g:”I am travelling to Spain this summer”(future plan)/”I am going to travel to Spain this Summer”(future intention+plan)

In the Dixon grammar book I use to teach English it says, “the present progressive can be used at times to express future if an adverb of future time is used. Verbs most often used in this way are verbs of motion such as come, leave, arrive, return, and go.”

They are coming to New York in July.

Is this sentence correct?

Hi,Ronnie. Great lesson. A question.
I have learned that we have two different ways to talk about the future.
1) Future “going to” when you make plans:
I’m going to travel to London next week.
You have plans that might happen or not.
2) Present Continuous with a Future Meaning:
They’re getting mearried tomorrow.
” I’m travelling to London tomorrow afternoon.”
” They’re getting married tomorrow.”
Everything has been arranged, you’ve got the
wedding dress, booked the church, the wedding
party and so on…
And I have also learned that we don’t say;
” I’m going TO GO to London next week. We must say” I’m going to London next week.”
And the same goes to the verb COME.
” She’s going to come tonight” WRONG.
“She’s coming tonight” should be the right tense.
Now, I really am kind of confused.
What’s the really correct form of the verb?
Is it okay to say: ” He’s going TO GO to the
beach with Mary tomorrow” or ” He’s GOING to
the beach with Mary tomorrow?
“She’s going to come tomorrow” or ” She’s coming tomorrow.”
I thank you in advance.

Ronnie I have a question about exercise number 9.Isn´t it future tense.WE have the word tomorrow at the end of a clause.I´m going to go home tomorrow.thanks for your coop.

yes it’s true but it’s better to follow The rule
Because we have Be going to + Base (Verb in the Infinitive)+……
So you’re totally right.

i think in the sentence I’am going to shopping .
that’s true , I think that mean the verb i will go o more than one or different shops to buy different thing not a specific one .
but when I say I’am going to shop I thinking about specific one for one purpose ? thanks :)
mido94mido
Ronnie, thank you for your videos. They are always fun. But I have one question. We also use Present Continious for actions in the future, not only when we confuse it with other future constructions, don`t we? We use it when we are sure for 100% that we will do something. Isn`t it a true fact?
LDNSB
Hi Ronni! How are you? Thank you for your help.lf you can plase help me for these two quations.

Hi Ronnie, It’s very clear what you said.Indeed I got a 100% score . But I have a question for you. Somewhere I took a multiple choice test somewhere where I had to choose between: 1) I am meeting my Brother this evening 2) I am going to meet my Brother this evening. I chose to be going to meet …. but honestly I am not sure about my answer because also present continuous with future meaning sounds good…In grammar books you find this explanation . iF you want to express ” arrangements + plans ” use Present Progressive; If you want to express ” only plans ” use to be going to. Tricky isn’t it ? thanks
ANGIE
H Ronnie please give me an answer regarding my previous comment/question. Thanks a lot ANGIE

“She is going to shopping”
why it’s not correct ?
Humayra024
I think it might be “She is going to shop” (Because this is future structure)
dreamerbeyondthedarksun
Hi. I am thinking the question number 9 is wrong, because it is missing verb to be in the sentence.

Admin, please delete these. Doesn’t work. I need to draw it. Thanks!

Dear teacher, about question number 6, I had doubts about the expression ‘most times’. For me, it seems ‘not all the time’. I got a little bit confused, can you please explain this grammar aspect to me? Thank you a lot, you are the best and the funniest teacher I have ever had.
Me too
Question can put doubt. Later you’ll make a mistake, I guess.
The ending ing is not used in stative verbs. For example, I want, need, understand, etc.
Thanks roonie
Hi,Ms why aree you so sad?
Very usefull Thank you.
Sery usefull and clear lesson :-)
You’re right Ronnie. This is a little confuse. going to go to doing to go to going =)
The last question was funniest than others …I couldn’t stop my laughing … :))
¡yeahhh! i got 90, that means that im not too bad, well i guess jajaja
I think there is a problem with the 9th question.
why do you think so?. The correct option is I’m going to go home tomorrow.
Yes. There is a problem with 9th question. Because the correct option is “I going to go home tomorrow – Yes, this sentence is correct”, but it the quiz correct answer is “NO”. So, my question is WHY?
Hi Pavlon and carlos77, because the sentence need the verb to be, in this case say:
“I going to go home tomorrow.” and the right answer must be “I am (i’m) going to go home tomorrow”, so, this is the difference.
you got it! :)
hELLO,
I made the same mistake, I did not pay attention to the “I am”.
Thank you Ronnie it was very simple and useful :)
Good evening Ronnie
Thanks for this class, really was a very confusion to me about the present continuous grammar.
Oi anselmo.
Acho que em inglês, a palavra classe nesse caso se traduz em “lesson”.
“Class” significa classe de aula somente.
Se vc quizer trocar umas ideias sobre o Inglês eu estarei encantado em ajudar.
Exactly Carlos
Thank you very much.
I am pleasure for your help.
Anselmo,
I am thankful for your help.
See u.
Oi carlos, eu gostaria de trocar idéias a respeito das lições. Meu e-mail é ccvcruz@terra.com.br
Carlos, voce corrigiu o Anselmo totalmente errado o que voce disse.
A palavra “class” nao significa somente a sala de aula, o Anselmo estava corretissimo. Ele poderia usar tanto “class” como “lesson” no comentario dele.
thanks so much, for such a helpful lesson
Clear explanation. Thanks!!!
no wiri… I understood…
she is going to shopping what’s wrong ??
You can use to + verbing!
I guess that it is “You can’t use to + verbing!”
Hi dear MS Ronnie,
I believe we smell something ,and not smelling.
Am I correct ?
I’m talking about minute 2:55 in the video.
can or can’t?!
In speaking that sentence correct to speak about future action..in writing its not correct we need to put base verb like “..to go shopping.”..and always follow “V1” after “to”…
this is basic( to + base verb )
good day
many thanks
You said:I am smelling a pencil,do you remember (to smell is stative verb can not be used with to be)go back to lesson stative verb you will know what I am talking about.please correct me if I am wrong.
Actually, you are wrong! xD

Hai..I’m manoj from india..i have one doubt..I hope you will clear it..”My parents have helped me a lot since I lost my job.”
“Tom has grown up a lot since I last saw him.”
The above two sentences are in present perfect using since word..This is the first time i’m seeing since word is used in present perfect..since word is also used in present perfect continous tense..so what is the difference.i have also checked that grow and help is not a state explain y we are using..i demand explanation..

Thanks Ronnie!!
Yes, the base verb is also called the infinitive. Check out the video on will vs. going to!!!

Very helpful lesson.
thank uuuuu very mach Mis Ronnie
much much much

Hi Ronnie! Please, tell me why uses passive voice with the following sentences
I am not interested in politics
He was surprised at her sudden disappearing
Thank you!
I think it’s not passive. “interested” and “surprised” are adjectives. And it’s like: (It is rainy. It was snowy.) Present and Past Simple. May be I am wrong :)
Thanks Leonid!
Sentences are written right. I saw sentences in english book
Thank you!
Is it right ?
a very positive explanation! Many thanks, Ronnie!
thanks… i got full marks……..
Dear Ronnie, thanks a lot for your great lessons! :). Would you please teach us in the future how to use appropriately the past perfect vs. the past perfect continuous? thank you so much before :)

Going to shopping is wrong! You can never have to + verbing!

A Gerund and a infinitive are MORTAL ENEMIES! This why, after “to” never ever use – any verb with “ing”! Correct: I’m going to go shopping!

Can any help in this regard to remove the confusion?
sorry for second last line “classical type of tenses” and “Can anyone…”
I think there’s a problem on no. 9.
please I want to know about faulty sentence structure would you like help me?

Here is my skype account rosehint87. If you want you can contact me so that I can learn more of this lesson. thanks a lot Maam Ronnie.
Hello guys. Someone can teach my english grammar and also my pronunciation. Here’s my skype account rosehint87.
what is a verb?
but also the present continuous can express the future or not ??
Hi Ronnie,
in this video you are saying the present continous is used for actions which are happening right now. Isn’t there a future tense which is similar to the present continous, i think it’s used for actions or events in the future which are planned AND arranged.
e.g.: I am having a job interview tomorrow at 3 p.m..
If i am right i think this should also be in this video or in any other video. I haven’t found anything about this tense here.
thank u..
im going to my bed
Hi Ronny,
If sentence 9 in your quiz is incorrect, then sentence 8 is incorrect, too. As far as I know, grammarians who overemphasize the normative aspect of the language would recommend that we avoid the use of the verb “go” with a “be going to” construction. So instead of saying “I am going to go to the mall”, we would rather say “I will go to mall” or ” I am going to the mall”. Also, you could have highlighted some differences in the communicative value between the present continuous and the “Be going to” form as they are used to refer to the future.
e.g:”I am travelling to Spain this summer”(future plan)/”I am going to travel to Spain this Summer”(future intention+plan)
salam ronnie thanks so much.

Here’s an idea: why don’t you hire at least one teacher from the US because we’re basically being taught North American English, and there are qujite a few differences between the way Canadians and people in the US pronounce some sounds and even the intonation patterns are often not the same …

You are the teacher that I discover Engvid with. Thank you RONNIE(with my respect).
In the Dixon grammar book I use to teach English it says, “the present progressive can be used at times to express future if an adverb of future time is used. Verbs most often used in this way are verbs of motion such as come, leave, arrive, return, and go.”
ex. Are you leaving for Europe next week?
They are coming to New York in July.

shy is going to shop >> true??

7. “She is going to shopping.”
Is this sentence correct?
thank you
Everything has been arranged, you’ve got the
wedding dress, booked the church, the wedding
party and so on…
And I have also learned that we don’t say;
Thank you! Lesson is useful and good presentation.
Thank you, Ronnie! You’re a greeeeat teacher! xxx
thanx ronnie i got 10 correct out of 10 awesome you`re a great teacher :)
Yay! 100! thanks! ^^
Hi Ronnie! At the end of the video you say” i’m going to go home NOW” Isn’t wrong when you use “now” when you talk about the future? Thanks.
I got 10 correct out of 10!!! thanks Ronnie for the lesson. I’m going to watch the other videos of you… xD

Hallo!!
Mam, i just want to ask differences between Stative verb and verb-ing on present continuous, you said that in stative verb lesson, “smell” is sense verb and we cant say i’m smelling bla bla bla, but in this video you said that i’m smellin … , i am so confused about it, just please tell me how to differentiate them. thank you mam. selamat sore
Bye Bye
I’m going to practice this learning… Well, I’m practicing this learning now, doing this comment. :-)
Dear lovely teacher…. Ronnie!!
Would it be possible for you to show which is the sentence who represent THE FUTURE and also tell me why because it confuse me…plZZZ

Thank you Ronnie, you are the best teacher
“She is going to shopping.” What is wrong with the sentence? It is a present continuous. My answer was wrong in the quiz. The question was- Is the above sentence correct? Ans- Yes. Result showed me wrong.
sometimes it was still confuse for using going to go or going to.
Hello, Ronnie! I watched yuor grammar lessons “Future & Present Continious” & Future Progressive(Continious). I don’t understand what kind of form should I use in the Future Tense??? going to go or will be going to///

M skype name is: samuel.thomae

really it was an amazing lesson ,thank you Ronnie.but i have a problem about present tense and present continous ,i confuse the two tenses :(
i think in the sentence I’am going to shopping .
that’s true , I think that mean the verb i will go o more than one or different shops to buy different thing not a specific one .
but when I say I’am going to shop I thinking about specific one for one purpose ? thanks :)
Ronnie, thank you for your videos. They are always fun. But I have one question. We also use Present Continious for actions in the future, not only when we confuse it with other future constructions, don`t we? We use it when we are sure for 100% that we will do something. Isn`t it a true fact?
Hi Ronni! How are you? Thank you for your help.lf you can plase help me for these two quations.
1, I confuzed for all tenses.
2, my writing is very poor.
Thank you for your help Ronnie. I like your videos. you are a good teacher.

Thanks Ronnie
Hi Ronnie, It’s very clear what you said.Indeed I got a 100% score . But I have a question for you. Somewhere I took a multiple choice test somewhere where I had to choose between: 1) I am meeting my Brother this evening 2) I am going to meet my Brother this evening. I chose to be going to meet …. but honestly I am not sure about my answer because also present continuous with future meaning sounds good…In grammar books you find this explanation . iF you want to express ” arrangements + plans ” use Present Progressive; If you want to express ” only plans ” use to be going to. Tricky isn’t it ? thanks
H Ronnie please give me an answer regarding my previous comment/question. Thanks a lot ANGIE
Hi Ronnie ! Your lesson is good, but English is too BAD … , so I have beginning HATE this langvech. (((((
Teacher, May i ask you some question. The question is “why i can not use making a quiz?” ref your quiz No.10, i answer ” i am making a quiz” but is wrong answer. Could you explain me?
When you say: I’m making a quiz ,you mean that you are literally writing a quiz, but this one is already done, you are only choosing the answers, so , you were doing a quiz.
i got it perfect. thank you Ronnie
