Thanks, Rebecca! What is the difference in the following phrases: ‘It is thought’; “It was thought”. Please explain with examples.

shans

The difference is that the first is in the present and the second refers to the past.

It is thought that …means something is believed today.

It was thought that….means that at one time people used to believe something, which is no longer considered true.

All the best to you, Shans.

    Rebecca

Hi Rebeca, I have other question away on the blog. I can use adverb in a sentence without a verb? example, I rarely share a picture.

Hello!
Thank you so much Rebecca, very interesting lesson.
I am looking forward your angvid.com team give us a lesson about the using of the word “Drop”.

I can’t really understand and use this word “Drop” unless you give us one lesson about it. :)
Thanks in advance

lyacine01

rebecca hi how do u do . is that necessary to use , can not , with the sentence which contain unless ? because i observed that most exaples there icluded it . thanks for your lesson and good luck .

atiyyah

You might use other terms such as:

You will not / would not be able to pass the exam unless you study.

    All the best to you.

    Rebecca

Hi Rebecca could you explain the nineth question for me i have got 9 out of 10

aduinterpreter

“Unless the people complain, the government will not change the existing laws.”

This means that if the people do not complain, the government will not change the current laws.

In other words, people need to protest, or complain, in order for things to change.

    All the best to you!

    Rebecca

      thanks Rebecca you are excellent

      aduinterpreter

You are a great teacher! I got 10 correct out of 10

avrora77

Hi Rebecca, thank you for this lesson. I just waited for the lesson about unless ;]
But in your examples there are always “You can’t do this if you don’t + verb”. And could you exdplain how to ues ‘unless’ in the examples below:

“You can’t buy a beer, if you are drunk”
“You shouldn’t go to work, if you feel ill”

please help!

gregorypl25

You cannot use the word unless in every sentence!

Below you would have to say something like this:
“You can’t buy a beer, unless you are sober”
“You shouldn’t go to work, unless you feel well”

That would make sense! All the best to you.

    Rebecca

10 out of 10. Thanks Rebecca!

iuliaioescu28

thanks a million but i think there is problem in the last question .

asala

    10. “She will not face the death penalty unless she is found guilty.”
    This means the same as:
If she is found guilty, she will face the death penalty.

It is correct, because she will only face the death penalty if she is found guilty.
    All the best to you.

Hello Engvid,

I have question please could you please help me out, My Question is ..

moe.abood

    I solve it.
    Thanks

    moe.abood

Sounds like the wrong quiz got attached! What lesson is this?

    engVid Moderator

No I think I was wrong because I watch them on YouTube and take the Quiz on your website so I got mixed with each other.

but thank you for your quick respond

      moe.abood

8 out of 10(y). Thank you!

nadoo96

“You can’t buy a beer, if you are drunk”
‘You can’t buy a beer unless you are not drunk’
or
‘You can buy a beer unless you’re drunk.’

“You shouldn’t go to work, if you feel ill”
‘You shouldn’t go to work unless you don’t feel ill.’
or
‘You should go to work unless you feel ill.’

bencebacsi

    I agree with:
‘You can buy a beer unless you’re drunk.’
    and
‘You should go to work unless you feel ill.’

In my opinion we can’t use ‘unless’ with ‘not’ in one part of the sentence: ‘Unless you don’t …’ it is a double negation.

    gregorypl25

I think a part sentence after ‘unless’ represents an exception and a negative statement also can be an exception. An exceptional condition can be something you don’t do.
Just try to imagine the following example.
You get up early everyday. That’s your daily habit. Now you’d like to say something exceptional about this situation.

‘I must go to bed before ten o’clock (in the evening) unless I don’t have to get up early.’

Because you get up early everyday, the only exception can be its negative statement. You know, if you don’t get up early, that doesn’t always mean that you get up late. You can get up in time or at a specific time what doesn’t tell if that’s early or late for you.

      bencebacsi

Probably you’re right. I thought that the word ‘unless’ always means ‘if not’, but I’ve heared once that it’s a expresion taht has specific meaning. But it always makes me confusing :P

And you’re right. I get up early every day ;]

        All the best!

        gregorypl25

Below Speaking English – How to use “unless” you wrote: You WON’T understand how to use this word UNLESS you watch this grammar lesson! maybe you meant: You WANT TO understand how to use this word UNLESS you watch this grammar lesson!
Thanx!

apolischuk85

No, actually, it is correct the original way.

Won’t means will not; in other words, you will not understand how to use this word unless you watch this grammar lesson.
    All the best to you.

    Rebecca

100! YAY! Thank you so much, Rebecca!

alexandra1d

Thanks Rebeca for one more usefull lesson.

fernandes108

Dear Rebecca, thank you so much!
Could we use untill/till as well?
E.g.
We won’t have dinner untill/till we book a table in a restaurant.

Does it work?
Thank you in advance for explanation.

kenzoll

You can use it but it has a different meaning from unless.

Until and till refer to a condition related to time only.

Unless refer to a general condition. For example,
We won’t be able to have dinner unless we book a table because that restaurant is always crowded.

    All the best!

    Rebecca

Dear Rebecca! I would like to ask for you that the sentence is correct above? (“kenzoll” wrote it)
“We won’t have dinner until/till we book a table in a restaurant.”
    or we should say it:
“We won’t have dinner until/till we don’t book (OR: we can’t book) a table in a restaurant.”
I think the last one is correct in meaning, isn’t it?
    – And How I have to say “tense” (in past or present) and in negative or positive after until/till?
Thank you in advance for explanation.

    dcsk

Thank you madam ,could you please take a lesson on untill/till ,this will clear more “unless”.
pls take a lecture on this. Thanks a lot in advance. I hope you will take a lecture.

rajpal90

I did the quiz perfectly. one question: I wasn´t going to get here early unless I take a taxi or I took a taxi. which is the correct?

thanks in advance!

ricart100

Thank you Rebecca

aouina

I don’t know how much people really know about his life.”Is this a correct sentence”.pls tell me about “how much people” or “how many people” which one is correct

rajpal90

‘people’ is the plural form of ‘person’. So, this is a countable noun and you have to use it with ‘many’. Use ‘much’ for uncountable nouns like ‘money, sugar, bread, flour’ etc.

    bencebacsi

      That is correct! Thank you!

      Rebecca

It was absolutely useful lesson! Thank you!

dredalrole

Thanks, I got 100!! but I need a help on this question from the quiz:

“Mary’s mother said she could not go to the mall with her friends unless she called and wished her grandmother for her birthday …”

My question is:

What changes in the meaning will occur if we write this question as follows:

1. Mary’s mother said THAT she could not go to the mall with her friends…

2. Mary’s mother said,” she could not go to the mall with her friends…”
(i.e. with punctuation marks)

Hope to get answered soon.

mohamedriswan

    1. This sentence is fine.
    2. It should be: Mary’s mother said to her, “You cannot go to the mall with your friends.”

When you use quotation marks, you must write the actual words spoken by that person and not just report the message.

    All the best to you.

    Rebecca

Thanks Rebecca, these videos really help a lot.

polo1954

Hi Teacher Rebecca,
thank you so much for helping us
I’ve been wondering which is correct
” people are …”
or ” people is .. ” ?
I know that “are” is for plural nouns
and “is” is for singular nouns BUT the word ” people ” confused me because in some songs it’s treated as singular! in others it’s treated as plural I know that people is the plural form of “person” but what confused was these songs ):
can help me please (:

ladyarchie

I would like to help you: The plural of PERSON IS PERSONS, Peoplo don´t have plural. I speak spanish language, the noun GENTE don´t have plural, It´s incorrect that you say GENTES, you can not say UN GRUPO DE 20 GENTES, instead you say un grupo de 20 personas / un grupo de gente, without specify the exact number, In this case of your song, you can not say PEOPLES because you made a mistake. PEOPLE/GENTE is used in singular and plural as english as spanish languages, I would like have contact with you through skype so we can to practice our common language.

    polo1954

Thanks, Polo. My best to you!

      Rebecca

“People are…” is correct. All the best.

    Rebecca

Thanks Rebeca! Now my concept is clear.

Interesting statement “Unless the people complain, the government will not change the existing laws.” It isn´t applied here in Brazil. Dictatorship disguised as democracy.

O.liveira

It was an excellent lesson. Thanks, Rebecca.

daffodile

Hi Rebecca!
Thanks for your efforts in teaching english free by this website (online). I have to tell you that it is very useful for me (us). I came from Hungary in the middle of Europe near to Ukraine, Slovakia, Transilvania, Austria, Slovenia with bordering on these countries. We are far away from those countries where English is native language (for example than in UK or in yours country, Canada) and even we can learn and improve it by your good lessons.
I have already heard original britain people speaking in english and I could not understand them because They cut the end of words or don’t pronounce some (more) letters in words. When I could hear people living in canada (to) speak english i was suprised. They speak english very understandably and I think the grammer is correct in opposite to english spoken in USA.
I would like to put some words (in this subject) here that I have read in a grammer book (called Practical English Usage).
“However, there are some cases where unless is impossible. In general, unless can be used in sentences that say ‘A will happen if it is not stopped by B’, but it cannot be used in sentences that say ‘A will result from B not happening’. ”
COMPARE:
I’ll be back tomorrow unless there’s a plane strike. (Or: ….if there’s not a plane strike)
I’ll be glad if she doesn’t come this evening. (Unless is impossible! -Mistake: …unless she come this evening. We can not use unless instead of “if she does not” because it will change the meaning of all sentence.)
I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t have an accident.
(Unless is impossible! -Mistake: …unless he does have an accident/…unless he has an accident. SAME: We can not use unless instead of “if he does not”)
***
These sentences are very similar in “understanding” to those ones where “unless” can be used.

Thank you so much for sharing all this information with everyone. I am glad to hear the English lessons on our website help you. It is difficult to improve when you don’t hear English in your everyday environment, but that’s where the Internet can help us so much. You can watch lessons and talks by various people and you also have the chance to go back and listen again if you don’t catch something the first time. I wish you all the best!

Could you please, upload a lesson about love-expressions? What I exactly want to clear is the way to express my liking or love to someone when addressing to him/her.
