    paula

Dear James,
Thanks a lot for your funny lesson. what I would like to know on this theme: You said that we do not use “not” before an adjective and noun combination. But what if I write like this” John is not a lazy teacher”? Here the adjective “lazy” & noun “teacher” aren’t in a combination form? My second question, said “no/not” aren’t go together in one clause. But look at the following dialog. Fre you crazy

Abe

if it possible to let me answer you this question “John is not lazy” I think that mr.James said that after verbs we have to use “not” and in your sentence the verb is”is” so simply we use “not” . so it would be a good idea for you to watch the lesson again in order to understand it more and more.

    leelian

There is an article before the adjective-noun combination, so you have to use not.
Look at the rules again, it is explained.
But your question was good for me to understand the subject better.

    petzi

correction for my second question. Fatma,y are you crazy? No, am not a crazy. would u explain me on these issue? thank you so much for your kind help

i think mr.james is very good in english doing a very good job but the only thing i felt he has learnt by his own & he is used to that language but if a person whose mothertongue is not english will find it very difficult to learn so i think some more study on how a person will quickly grasp the technique of using english should be done.

andresito99

Hello James,
Thanks for awesome lecture and made your mind clear ……. I have a question, u said in lecture that use NO with the combination of adj and noun.So is it right way to use………. They are not good people…………..Please reply soon

Arshad Mehmood

oh bad! sir James do not reply to your question… but i think your sentence is correct.

    totong

But there was the combination of adj and noun…………………

      Arshad Mehmood

yap…but good only modifies people and it is positive… but, it might be wrong if you use bad as modifier to people… then you use not bcoz it becomes double negative… like, “they are not bad people” bcoz it means they are quit good people.

        totong

Sorry James….. Made our minds clear instead of your mind………. Sorryyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

Arshad Mehmood

thank you very much sir and maam to add more knowledge about english……..

Bench

thank you mr james

king12

thanks a lot your style is amazing but you speak quite fast to be understood for beginner students.

Shaimaa

Thanks a lot

boudjemaa

This is the good lesson, but I wonder James said that ” No don’t use with much/any/many/enough” but he give example for yes/no question is “no, I don’t like any cake” is it different?

maingoc

yes, bcoz what i understood is the “no” from that sentence is a dependent clause from the independent clause I don’t like any cake. what sir James used is “not” from the word “don’t” means do not. you can write that sentence in this way “No! I do not like any cake.”.

    totong

ahhh! now i can understand, thank you very much totong. ^_^

      maingoc

your welcome,,,, I’m glad to help, because even me I need help also to improve my English. So, I hope that we help each other to improve our English…. I’m glad to see you here in EngVid.com….

The instructor seems to be very comfortable during the class. The lesson and the rules are easy to retain. The visual supports used to convey various rules to the learners are very relevant to me. As an English learner, this is a class could attend without hesitation.

James, maybe you could enrich this lesson by explaining how we should use ‘none’ properly, huh? thanks in advance ;) PS> I love your lesson with the Bale’s outburst on the set of “Terminator”, btw, you should do the same on the (bad) language from “Full Metal Jacket”…

ronniepl

It was really a useful lesson like no anybody can do it. Thank you teacher you are not only a good teacher but and a amazing guy . Greetings from Athens.

pafsilipoclub

James much respect to you! I have bin through many English classes, but after 10 min. I could not keep my attention on the lesson….with one word…BORING. You got special gift of how to make the students entertain the whole time and still come back for more :-). As I started to teach English now in Europe I would greatly appreciate some of your teaching tips. Perhaps you can start the “learning teaching” classes yehhhhh! :-)

marie78

5/5 thanks james

miranda28

5/5 It’s realy good !

Mr.Maxer

thank you sir……..

tharindudoo

I liked it very much, but I think that your examples about using not before articles preceding nouns and before “many/any/enough” are all examples of the third rule: using “not” to form a negative sentence, to make verbs negatives: “It IS NOT a house”, “I DO NOT HAVE enough time”. I don’t think that the use of NOT here has any relation with the article or the word “enough”. And regarding “enough/many/any”, for me, they are all ADVERBS and not ADJECTIVES…

lorenabrandizzi

5 correct out 5
Thank you,James.

Hi James,
thanks a lot for your exellent lesson
take care

cep62

Thanks James, your way of making students understand is very good. I like it. Thanks again :)

pawanranar

“Long time no see” is really used by native speakers? it sounds very strange to me. If I meet a friend who I haven’t seen for a long time, how should I say?

yohanis5605

How to know when not to use the auxiliary verb to form a negative sentence?

For instance:

I prefer people don’t call me at night”
I prefer people not to call me at night”

“This made him not to change his mind”
“This made him doesn’t change his mind”

Thanks loads!

Silpedra

Hi James,

Could you teach us about negative infinitive?
Thanks.

kaezer

Hi James what is the difference between, I have no money and I don t have money could you explain tha to me ? please !

pitote

Kedter

No bad, I do not suprise with your way to teach excellent work. Thank you.

Kostas690

I do not like cake. This is my sentence. Can I put an article before ‘cake’?

Lodivikus

Excellent!!!

Maribelle

I asked my mother how many rules there were. She had no answer.

Lisafromitaly

James, could you tell me if these sentences are
correct? It’s about the NOT thing.

Preceeds a noun that has an article:
1) He wants a pen, not a pencil.

With many, any and so on…

2)He brought some cokes, NOT many.

Negatives: Can it be in the contracted form?

She isn’t patient at all.

Please, tell me if it’s okay or NOT okay! Geez!

Sonia1234

Please, James, could you write me something about
my sentences with NOT?

I’d like to know if they are correct.

Ah! I was doing some thinking and I remembered
the famous Shakespearean ” To be or NOT to be”.

So, before infinitives with to we use NOT.

See? I’d like to NOT be boring, but once again
could you say something about my sentences???

Sonia1234

Thank U for giving a lesson.

Mahesh Magar

Oh!Oh!I think I made a huge mistake. I wrote:
“I’d like to NOT be boring” but I think it’s
totally wrong. Should it be:
“I’d like NOT to be boring”.

Now, I really don’t know how to say this using
the NOT thing. I think I have to use another
example. I need to put on my thinking hat.

James, will you ever correct my sentences?

Thanks in advance.

Sonia1234

saranga

Hi James I’m Sarah,
Can you Please do a vocabulary lesson about politics, vote, rights and all that Stuff.
Thanks on d’avance (Merci d’avance).

Sunsarah

I don’t believe in grammar at all ! (As Aj Hoge Says too)
grammar just makes you confused and because of that your english get worse!!!
If you want to speak fluently, you don’t have time to think about grammar at all!
The words must come out automatically without thinking like when you ride a bicycle without thinking how to ride.
And like a native illiterate person that can speak very well but obviously he/she does not know any (i mean any) grammar!

Mohsen Barati

Thanks good lesson

Jackelinebsanchez1
