hi ronnie how r u… i’m your fan. help me?

      Zeeshan Ahmed

      I do have a question!
The is used when both persons know of “what” they are talking about, right? So why you have to say, “I will meet you in AN hour, instead of: I will meet you in THE hour.” in that case, both, speaker and listener know of what hour they are talking about. :) Thanks and I love your classes, you’re cool!!!

      kizaelemir

I want generally describe how does a device work. It consists of two elements: a cutter and a pin. Is “the” correct in the phrase: “as a cutter penetrates a working material, the pin recesses” if the reader knows (or at least should know) that the pin is a part of that device and I do not mean any other pin but this specific pin in this device even if I didn’t mention this specific pin before?

greg

Yes, I would say the pin in this situation!

    Ronnie

      hello Ronnie,

Abdelle

I learned that before u sound in university it goes the article “a” because a don’t know what about phonetic, am I right?

juan manuel

Yes, you are correct! English has so many exceptions to all the rules and Uni. is one of them!

    Ronnie

Can you please come with more detail that where to use ‘a’?

Maddy

    Hi there!
The issue is the sound you hear at the beginning of the following word disregarding weather the first letter is a vowel or a consonant.
    For example,
-A one-pound meat. as much as (one) starts with the letter (o)which is vowel we hear (wan)which is consonant sound so, we use (a) not (an).
-A union,a university,a unit,a useful book, a European woman all starts with a consonant sound which is (y) as in young. BUT before words like umbrella,
    uncle,and underpass we use (an)because
they starts with a vowel sound which is short( u )as in up,under, truck, ect.
On the other hand we use (an) before words starts with a consonant letter because the first letter is silent as an hour,an honest man.
Or the first letter is sounded as a vowel sound .for example
    -an MP …the ( M) sounds (em).
    -an X-ray….the (X) sounds( eks).
    -an SOS…the (S) sounds ( es ).
PLEASE note that the letters (a,e,i,and o ) always make vowel sound, so always use (an) when the word starts with one of them. I hope that would help.BUT wait!!!! until engvid.com and Ms. Ronnie approve this comment, because I ,personal, have a problem with the English language and still need to learn more, and I could be wrong about it ,and I hope , Ms.Ronnie , correct this comment,So I feel confident.THANKS.

    ms.

    Atef

      ADDITION to the above comment.
      The letters (a,e,i,and o)always make
vowel sound except in the word (one)(one is a sight word in which the pronunciations has nothing to do with the spelling.),So use the article (an)when you see one of them at the beginning of the following word.
But the letter U makes a consonant sound and a vowel sound.
      ONE MORE EXAMPLE
The letter( R )is a consonant letter,
But if you want to say ( I have one radio) you must say ( I have a radio )
because you hear the consonant sound (reh) at the beginning of the word radio. But if you want to say ( I see
one R ) you must say ( I see an R ) because you hear a vowel sound like the one you hear when you say the verb
to be (are).Briefly you should know that the letters are difirent than the sounds and there are two kinds of sounds ,vowel sounds and consonant sound.Good luck !!!
IF YOU PLEASE WAIT UNTIL ENGVID.COM AND
      MS. RONNIE APPROVE THIS COMMENT.

      Atef

very useful. Thanks to you and for Ronnie too.

      alinamohamed

good for you Alina…step forward and dont stop…I hope to become a good english teacher…now im really learning

Hope u got me,
Warm Regards,

fatiima8

    I have no idea. Sorry.

    how do u do?

    myha

Nice one Ronnie. My gratitude to you and the engvid team.

dkwg4j

Thanks, Ronnie. I wonder which article to use with the work university. In my country we were tought to use a. Here the rule is you use only with words where the first letter is pronounced as a vowel.
And another question: in the morning, in the afternoon. Is pronounciation same? Thanx for your reply.

danip

Yes, there are ALWAYS exceptions to grammar rules in English! University is one!

    Ronnie

Another country with an article is the Ukraine.

Kirill

Ukraine now lost its article, so “the Ukraine” was downgraded to “Ukraine” :D

    ivan1

hi ronnie can u plz tell me whats the proper meaning of how come in detail

bilalkhan2011

    How come = Why.
I went to the store. How come? (why?)
Because I needed to get some film.

    Ronnie

    Hi,
    Let me explain more plz,
    Let’s have a look 2 these 2(why n how come)in question 4m:
    1.Why don’t u do ur assignment?
    2.How come u don’t ur assignment?
As it’s obvious, the order is different,
    (why + auxiliary verb),(how come + subject)
Does it help?! I hope so.
    The best with ur English!

    fatiima8

I don´t understand anything of this explanation?

      ilmeg

Ronnie’s lesson was very useful

    Ronnie

I have one simple question about more specific things. Ronnie, you said that we should use the article “the”, but what with “this”, “these”, “that”, and “those”?

Could I use the word “this” instead of “the”? For instance: “You see a new car. This car was made by…” Is it acceptable, or I have to use “the” instead?

morfik

Yes, you can use these, this etc!

And this makes me question if I really understand what country means. For me, countries are Japan, Egypt, United Sates, etc, or it can be applied to some zone in a country, Canary Islands, for example?

Hello Ronnie,
sorry for nagging, but I have a few comments.
I have never heard of the rule, that with a country, which is comprised of many little islands, we use “the”. In fact Japan is an example of such a country (it’s comprised of thousands of small islands, apart from main four islands). I think we use “the” with plural names of places e.g. the Philippines, the Netherlands, the Bahamas etc. Also, I think you might have included, that we use “the” with names with ‘Republic’ e.g. the Dominican Republic. Would we use “the” with these countries: Russian Federation, Papua New Guinea? Many thanks

Hello Ronnie! Can you correct all the  mistakes in my story? Do I Have any grammatic mistakes?

Princess Diana dies in Paris crash

The princess of Wales has died after a car crash in Paris. The accident happened after the princess left the Ritz Hotel in Paris with her companion, Dodi al Fayed-son of Harrods owner, Mohammed Al Fayed. The Princess’ Mercedes car was apparently being pursued at high speed by Photographers on motorbikes when it hit a pillar and smashed into a wall. Mr Al Fayed and the chauffeur died at the science. The princess and the bodyguard were still alive in the car, so the recue cut the wreck, and took Diana and her bodyguard to the hospital. The surgeons tried to save her life, but she died after two hours. Only Princess Diana´s bodyguard, Trevor Rees-Jones, survived the crash. Blood tests Showed the driver, Henri Paul had taken both drugs and a large quantity of alcohol before the accident.

If the word is plural (lions) we don’t use an article. However, the second time we talk about the same lions, we say THE lions as they are specific (we know which lions you are talking about)!

htran70058

Hi! I’m sorry my English please. I’m going to try to explain me.
I’m not sure about “a” pronunciation in USA vs UK (well, and Canada as well…NZ..etc).
For example:
In–> a dog, a bottle, a brush…
1) “a” sounds like ‘a’ in ‘man’ if I’m talking with somebody from Uk?
2) In USA, people pronounce ‘a’ like in wave?
3) In Canada ‘a’ sounds always like UK people pronounce?

I’m not sure if you understand what I mean.
Thanks.

By the way I’m from Tenerife, Canary Islands :)

crooibos

There are SO MANY different British, American and Canadian accents that is it impossible to tell you how each sound. Depending on what part of each country a person is from (and their education), will change how they say words!

Hi, Ronnie!
You’re an amazing teacher. I really love your lessons :) Your teaching style is very, very, very helpful, especially for non-native speakers like me.
You mentioned that you were gonna make a lesson about when we do not use articles before the nouns. Are you still gonna do this? Because I couldn’t find any similar lesson in a list of your lessons. Or you were taking about Alex’s lesson? However, that lesson doesn’t cover some confusing things, for instance, what’s the difference between “listening to music” and “listening to THE music”? Why is it “matter of fact” and not “matter of a/the fact”?
So, if you ever make a lesson about all these tricky things, many of non-native English speakers will very deeply appreciate that. ;)
Thank you again for your wonderful lessons!

ivan1

We have to say listen to music because music is uncountable. Matter of fact is an idiom so we don’t use an article!
    Thanks for watching!

    Ronnie

Well, those were just examples… Nevertheless, thank you very much for your reply.

      ivan1

Hi? Ronnie, thank you for your lessons. They’re really helpful.I’m a bit confused about the lakes. We don’t use “the” with lakes, do we?
Lake Ontario, for instance. What happens if we ommit the word “lake”?

Irina

We do not use THE with lake names! You must say Lake Ontario, if you omit the lake part, it is referring to the province of Ontario!

    Ronnie

Wow! Thanks for teaching us. You are one of my favorites teachers! I am puerto rican and I wish learn much about english and its grammar. Sorry if I wrote wrong.

Hello, Ronnie. Thank you very much. I´m learning a lot of English with you. I´ve got a pair of questions for you:
– In a part of the lesson you say “…The very first letter of the alfabet” Is it necessary to use the word “first” in this case or you use it only to increase the meaning?.
– I thought the thing you use to blow your nose was called “handkerchief”. I understand perfertly the word kleenex and we use this word in Spain too, but I want to know if “handkerchief” is only use in Britain or if this word is old fashioned or something.

Thank you very much!. By the way, the Canary Islands is not a country, this islands belongs to Spain.

Hi,Ronie

I’m curious if I want to say that I used to have strange habit of ignoring any ideas offered by inferior people because I think that their ideas can never be better than mine.

Do I need to put a or the before “strange habit” since strange modifies habit and habit is a noun? Or we have to put articles right in front of nouns only?

Thank you

Ronnie I love your lesson !!! I saw two lessons before yours and they just got me confused. When you started the class you said you did not have the energy to teach all the article rules, but let me tell you something, You are the best!!! You are the only one who brought out more point of how to use an article then the other two previous lessons I watched. thank you very much!!!

jazmin1022

Hi Ronnie, I have one question. If you say that we put ‘the’ before the country name like The United States of America for two reasons. One reason is that it starts with ‘U’ and another one is it has more than two words.

But what about the country India. It also starts with ‘I’, then why we do not put ‘the’ before it. Yes, it contains only one word.

Now, it strike to me that if both the conditions are true, then we put ‘the’. Is it so? Please clarify my doubt…. Thanks… Best Regards…

These sentences are potentially ambiguous:

I want ___ apple.
Look at ___ moon.
I’d like ___ egg for breakfast, please!

The quiz answers are the most likely answers, but there are cases where one of the other answers would have been correct. Example, I want the apple (from the bowl of mixed fruit).

why the answer is “the”?
why “a” is wrong?
for example, I just know “Bob and Kevin go to a same school.” but I don’t know which one exactly.
Please help me to undrestand.

vahidvahidi

cuz… they go to the same school that they already know, and if you use “a” it would be wierd at that sentense, cuz it doesn’t has a vowel at begining of “same school” even “an” doesn’t work, so “The” us perfect

Hı Ronnie , Are your beginner grammar lessons enough for the starter?

sule8289

Dear Ronnie, I like your presentations, they have helped me a lot. But I have a doubt regarding this lesson, is it ‘a university’ correct? or is it the exception of the rule?

saranda1

Yes, “a university” is right! The “u” in “university” is pronounced /juː/ not /uː/ (in IPA), or like you rather than boot. Other words that start with the same sound work the same way: you would say “This singer has a unique voice”, or “That place sounds like a utopia”.

When the “u” at the beginning of a word is pronounced /ʌ/ (“uh”) or /uː/ (“oo”), we use “an”. For example, “an unusual way” or “an udon dish” or “he was playing an oud”. (“Udon”, pronounced “OO-don”, is a Japanese word for a kind of thick noodle. “Oud”, from Arabic, is an Arabic musical instrument that is kind of like a lute. Off the top of my head, I can’t think of any English words that start with /uː/. I wonder why?)

    I hope this helps!

i have problem with the + school. When i use that, it’ll mean I and somebody know what school i am talking about.

But i read a rule in Murphy’s book.

We say:
(go) to work, (be) at work, start work, finish w ork
■ Bye! I’m going to work now. (not to the work)
in this example if somebody knows where i work, I’ll need to say to somebody – Bye! I’m going to THE work now ???

(go) to school, (be) at school, start school, finish school, etc.
■ What did you learn at school today? (not at the school)in this example somebody knew about my school. He/she needs to say – What did you learn at THE school today?
