I think it would be very good for those of us with a certain level to go deeper in writing skills. Although it is not nice to repeat words in the same paragraph, FANTASTIC LESSON all the way.

I have some problems with writing as sometimes i don’t know what to write about. If it’s not difficult for u, could u please give me some essential tips for writing tasks (1 and 2). Thanks in advance.
P.S. Once again – lesson was brilliant!

Tuesday, July 23rd 2013

    Hi Kate,

I’m afraid there is too much to tell you about that here. I will make some lessons on that but it might take some time.

    For now though:
task 1- do not give an opinion.
    – first paragraph summarize the task given ( i.e., what are you looking at?)
    – next two paragraphs, mention highlights, that is highs and lows, major trends, drastic changes, etc. don’t try to include everything.
    – there is no need for a conclusion.

task 2:- have an introduction that presents the topic, the question, your stand on the question, and how you will argue for it.
    – at least two body paragraphs, one for each line of reasoning you will take (as presented in intro)
    – conclusion should be a short summary of the essay. Do not introduce new ideas.
    – make sure you give good and realistic examples.

Hopefully you have already passed your test so this is needless, but just in case. :)

    Friday, August 2nd 2013

Thank u so much for ur tips! I passed IELTS on 6.0! It’s very good result for me, because it’s my first time ever passing such kind of difficult exam!!! :) :)

Tuesday, July 23rd 2013

Good eye Cuong ta. You’re right, that was probably a typo.

    Friday, August 2nd 2013

Thanks for the cognitive lesson!

Adam, whether you can help? I absolutely cannot understand the difference between From where/where from, What for\For what…
and when to use this?

Tuesday, July 23rd 2013

    Hi Kazumi,

Well, there are some old English textbooks that teach that you should never end a sentence with a preposition. It’s a little old fashioned, but some people still believe that and follow that rule. They think you should say:
From where did you get that dress?

    not

Where did you get that dress from?

These days both are considered acceptable, unless you’re a purist. But they mean the same thing.

Not sure if that answered your question, but I hope it helps. Let me know.

    Friday, August 2nd 2013

It helps me a lot! Thank you immensely ^-^

Thus my conclusion is that If I want to say the well-known expression “Where are you from?”, I can also say “From where are you?”.
At least this rule exists in our days .)

      Sunday, August 4th 2013

This is a very good lesson about writing skills suited for writing in any language, not just in English.

Wednesday, July 24th 2013

Hi Adam. A dent is also a bump on a car’s body isn’it? In French writing style, a dent is called an “alinéa”.

I am studying English le best as I can. With this aim, I am working everyday vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation. One problem is the richness of the English vocabulary which probably counts more than twice the number of French words. In addition, a single word can become a verb or a noun and often, adding ‘ly’ or ‘ness’ to a verb, you get an adverb or a noun not to mention the phrasal verbs which are pure nightmares. However we can take advantage of this abundance of words to avoid repeating twice a word in one sentence.
Now, concerning grammar….
At last, I would say that pronunciation is capital to be understood by native English speakers, you are better off making vocabulary or grammar than pronunciation mistakes.
So, I can just say that learning English is a nice personal challenge..

Wednesday, July 24th 2013

    I agree Patple.

Keep up the good work. :)

    Friday, August 2nd 2013

I appreciate you and website for these lessons, i was wondering if you could give all the vocabulary word related to (ANGRY and SORROW) including phrase related to these words…
thanks to all

Wednesday, July 24th 2013

    Hi Niravpanchal,

If you go to m-w.com, they also have a thesaurus that will give you these words. Better yet, buy the Roget’s International Thesaurus“. It’s amazing.

    Friday, August 2nd 2013

Thanks sir,its the best website for me to impprove my english, and its very intresting lesson. please upload some other vedios which help me for writng.

Thursday, July 25th 2013

I try to answers the quiz without watching the video.so,i only got 5 correct out of 10.that was so bad.

Thursday, July 25th 2013

Hahaha! What did you get *after* you watched the video?

    Friday, July 26th 2013

60 — this is the worst score I’ve ever had, at least for a very very long time. I just can’t choose the better option. Sometimes two, or even three, variants sound good to me, so how can I decide? :)

The funniest thing is that in my country people use tab for starting a new paragraph, and I do not follow that way, and I’m using space (skipped line) all the time because I think this looks a way better than a little indentation. Besides in the internet, everyone uses spaces because you can’t simply make tab in these forms on www pages when you are commenting something. :)

Thursday, July 25th 2013

I agree. I skip lines as well, but it all depends on who you are writing for. Every publication has its own style guide. Academic writing, though, usually asks for indentation.

    Friday, August 2nd 2013

thanks adam your lessons are really helpful.
I wanna know which English is considered standard world wide, British or American and why?

Friday, July 26th 2013

    Hi DSingh,

Can’t really say there is a standard. I think American is more popular but that’s because America has a greater reach globally, in terms of Hollywood, CNN, etc. Internet English is mostly American as well. I’ll try to see if there is any research on this question and let you know.

    Friday, August 2nd 2013

Please keep helping me with my English. Thank you

Saturday, July 27th 2013

B: So do I.
Right???????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!

:) fatiima!

Monday, July 29th 2013

    Hi Fatima,

Yes, that’s exactly right. Always agree with the verb.
    A: I love English.
    B: So do I

A: I’ve never been to Paris.
    B: I haven’t either.

    :)

    Friday, August 2nd 2013

What’s up? How’s everything?

I’m having too much dificulty understanding the difference and usage of “on to” and “onto”. Could you explain them?

She held on to her child in the crowd.

Let’s step onto the dance floor.

So, how did you get onto this deal?( does get onto here mean to know about sth?)
Thanks

Monday, July 29th 2013

    Hi Henrique,

With on to, remember that the on goes with the verb, the to goes with the object.
so, hold on, means grab, or hold tight. to what? to the rail.

‘onto’, basically means ‘on’. It’s not used as often as plain ‘on’.

As for the ‘get onto this deal’, it means as you said, to come to know/be involved with something.

    Friday, August 2nd 2013

Thank you so much. Adam

thank you a lot for support have luck……

Friday, August 2nd 2013

Hi Adam, great lesson! I thought it was going to be a pretty boring aspect of English ( sorry, but it’s not as much fun as say, idioms or vocabulary :)) ) but you made it really interesting and what’s the most important – useful :)

My question concerns putting quotations. I’m not sure if my inquiry is within the subject, but if it’s not too much trouble, can you please explain how I should quote in say, MA thesis? Just to be sure that we’re on the same page, for example ” learning should be an autonomous process” Brown J. … should I use ” or ‘ ? What else should I write, the year, the page, what if Mr. Brown is also quoting someone else ? Sorry if I haven’t explained my question thoroughly enough but that’s just it- I’m really confused when it comes to these quotations in e.g. MA thesis. Thanks a lot!:)

Friday, August 2nd 2013

    Hi Cornellie,

You’re not alone. It is very confusing. First of all, you need to find out which style guide you’re supposed to use (APA, MLA, Chicago). Your MA syllabus shouold tell you that.

Next, try OWL at Purdue. This site will give you all the formatting info you need. It’s a very useful and easy to use site.

Let me know how it goes.

    Friday, August 2nd 2013

Thanks for the great comments everyone :)

but I have another problem. next week I have an exam at Uni, level FIRST(B2) and for the writing, it could be an article, a report, a formal letter or an essay. I would know which are the main rules of each types of writing? For example: when and where phrasal verbs can be used, when not, or how many paragraphs there are for an article, how many for a report or an essay? and so on. I hope that you understand what I mean. Thank you so much another time:)

Thank you Adam for this lesson, it reminds us how important vocabulary is to avoid repetitions.

Thursday, November 28th 2013

on the video, I find the sentence “they have access to means with which to enforce the law and punish offenders.” advanced. I am not familiar with the term “with which”. If I were to write it, it would be something like “they have access to resources which can enforce the law and punish those who violate them.”.

Adam, do you mind explaining this? does this give extra points to the essay?

Sunday, December 1st 2013

TEACHER ADAM WOULD YOU MIND DOING A VIDEO ABOUT USAGE OF ALL TENSES PLEASE IT WOULD BE VERY HELPFUL

Tuesday, December 31st 2013

THAT WOULD BE A VERY LONG LESSON, CAN YOU NARROW IT DOWN A BIT?

Great Class!!

It´s the sort of class that i´ll watch several times and take good information each time i watch. It´s not easy to make such explanation!!

Saturday, November 22nd 2014

Hi Adam! This is a great lesson. I am planning to retake my IELTS because I did not quite reach the writing band score that I had wanted (I had a 6.5 but I was opting for a 7 or a 7.5). I like writing, to be honest, but I struggle a lot when it comes to academic writing. Your video made it easier for me to understand how ideas should flow within a paragraph and how to transition to the next paragraph without making the reader confused as to what I am trying to convey.
Thanks once again. Im looking forward to more videos from you regarding the IELTS and IELTS Academic Writing.

Sunday, November 23rd 2014

Sir
Really impressive VIDEOS. I must say you are in the real sense a fab teacher.
I have a doubt in writing.HOW LONG AN INTRODUCTORY PARA SHOULD BE.
BECAUSE IN VIDEOS DUE TO COMPLEX SENTENCES IT SEEMS TO BE OF LONG ENOUGH.
EXCELLENT JOB DONE SIR.
HOPE TO SEE MORE VIDEOS ON WRITING AND PARAPHRASING .

Thursday, April 2nd 2015

Hi Adam!
First of all, thank you! This is a very useful lesson, like most of your lessons.
I was wondering, is the paragraph you gave as an example not too long for an essay? If you have 3 paragraphs like this + introduction + conclusin it’s gonna be more than 350 words, or even more than 400. I thought that an essay should be more concise and not too oversized, otherwise you may loose points. I though that perfect essay size is between 250 and 300 words.
Not even to mention that very few people could write such a long essay with good coherance and grammar in less than 40 minutes.
Could you comment on this, please.

Sunday, April 26th 2015

Indicate which underlined portion contains an error.
