You will surely have to ask and answer the important question of where and when you were born many times in your life. Yet many students make mistakes when providing this critical information. Watch this English lesson to get it right.
Great video. Great class!!!!
Thanks for sharing!!!
hai dear rebecca
i would like to thank your teaching way very intresting to me i got high mark your test.i want to be a native spearker withing six month.i will have interviw.it is good oppotunity for me.
I think you should also mention the preposition at when talking of specific place where one is born: ‘I was born at County General Hospital in Chicago, Illinois’
hi Rebecca it’s beautiful lesson i wanna know what difference in accent ”burn _ born ” can you help me
thanks a lot
It’s true that some people may not distinguish clearly between these two words.
You can pronounce “born” like I have in the video and also like the name Jason Bourne in the Bourne series of movies (Bourne Identity, Bourne Supremacy, etc.)
The word “burn” is pronounced more like bern or turn or learn. The vowel u in the word burn takes on more of a short e sound, as in the words above.
This lesson will help students answering the questions mostly asked by the examiner during speaking module of IELTS.
Thank you very much.
Yes, you’re right. They do ask such personal information questions in the first part of the IELTS speaking exam. Thanks for pointing that out, Sania. My best to you.
Really?? Sometimes life is easier than we expect and that’s okay too! We have many other videos at higher levels too, if you enjoy challenges. All the best to you, Cristina.
hi rebeca write feedback please and i wanna learn english well. i have to pass my exam . and you write something i ll be happy so much. all the best

Can you make a video of some sample answer to IELTS speaking tests?I hope u will. Thanks in advance.
Thanks for the suggestion, Sonika. In the meantime, you may find some good tips for answering IELTS speaking questions on my website goodluckielts.com.
hi
there’s an expression I’d like you share it with you guys, to show where you born and rise at the same time:
I was born and breed in Blida.
is that Ok dear Rebecca.
Thanks for thinking of that, Raheem. The expression is “born and bred”.
For example, if you say, “She was born and bred in France.”, it means she was born there and grew up there and she is French in terms of cultural characteristics.
Thanks for sharing that with us, Raheem. All the best to you.
MAM, good lesson! I have a question and I have always been confused in preposition which you have used ‘on Sept 25′ but I was told that , when we talking about months and years we use the preposition ‘in’ e.g I was born in September 25,1995…PLZ tell me am I wrong or what else?
Sorry, the correct preposition for one day or one date is “on”.
So we have to say,”I was born on Sept 25, 1995.”
However, if you are only giving the month and year, then you can say,
“I was born in September 1995.”
Perhaps that’s what you meant.
All the best to you, Shayra.
Hello Rebecca. Thank you very much for lesson. I have a question, how can i say my birthday, if i want to say date and year, i mean with wich preposition? Thank you.
You can say,
I was born on January 25, 1995.
We say this because the month comes first and we have to use the correct preposition before we mention months, which is “on”.
Thank you for your help it is really helpful, but do you have a lesson on where should we use at (eg.time) on ( for day) etc something that is more specific to understand the rule of using these prepositions.

Hello Rebecca. I am revising the verb tenses right now, and I really enjoy studying with your video lectures. I have a question:
Is the verb “was born” past tense of the verb “to be born” or passive voice of the verb “bore”?
If the task is to determine the verb tense in the sentence “I was born (time expression).”, what would be the correct answer? I have already read several explanations about this problem but none of them refers precisely which rule to follow. Thanks.
Thank you so much Ms Rebecca. I like this website alot, it ready help me to improve my English dan I like your lesson, simple, easy to understand and very helpfull

My best to you, Caesar.
Thanks a lot.
why the preposition on be used ON your birthday.
The word “on” is used in the phrase “on your birthday” because we generally use “on” when we refer to one day or one date. Examples are:
on Monday
on January 25
on New Year’s Day
Therefore, we also say:
on my /your / his / her birthday
Hope this helps, Abdul. All the best to you.
Hi dear Rebecca,

good lesson thanks for you rebecca….
that really very useful, thank you Rebeca
Hi mam,
If I want to mention time, date and year together, how can I tell it?
Thank you.
Good question. In this case, we would need to use more than one preposition, according to the information we are giving. For example,
I was born at 5:15 a.m.on June 15, 1990.
My best wishes, backer.
Thanks so much
i wish it had been a little bit more difficult…
Really?? Sometimes life is easier than we expect and that’s okay too! We have many other videos at higher levels too, if you enjoy challenges. All the best to you, Cristina.

Thanks.
