Hi, I woul like to know if your sentence is correct or not, you wrote I WISH I WAS RICH…….., but I know that one rule says that when you’re using wish to talk about things that you want to be true now, but that are not true you must use simple past after wish, but you have to use were instead of was after wish; so, your example should be I WISH I WERE RICH. I would like to know if I’m right or not. Thank you!!!

What you mention is the “subjunctive tense.” To express something imaginary, unreal, hypothetical…
A) I wish I were rich. I wish he were in Thailand. I wish she were my girlfriend.
The above is the formal, prescribed grammar… (they all express unreal or imaginary situations).
BUT, one can also say and hear:
B) I wish I was rich. I wish he was in Thailand. I wish she was my girlfriend.
Example (A) is prescribed, formal grammar (best for tests).
Example (B) is also used, even by native speakers. It is “wrong” only in the formal sense. It is “right” because native speakers say it all the time.
(A) I wish I were a better person.
versus
(B) I wish I was a better person.
Which is correct? For a test, (A) is correct. For everyday usage, either (A) or (B) is correct, BUT you will probably hear (B) more often.
This is simply because the subjunctive tense is not used by native speakers in some situations; maybe the subjunctive sounds strange [it does!], maybe it is going out of style [perhaps some day it will]…

.. as what i have learned.. if you wish for sumthing which is impossible, you must use the simple past tense were. I WISH I WERE RICH.. IS THAT GRAMMATICALLY ACCEPTABLE..

I have a question about the following example you gave us in the explanation: “He never helps me with the dishes,I wish he would” Would it be possible to say: “He never helps me with the dishes, I wish he did” I would like to know if this second sentences it gramatically correct, and if so, isn’t it very commun to say it that way? Please help me to rewrite this sentence “She won’t visit me again.” => “I wish….”. “Won’t” means future, but if we talk about future we use hope. So, how can I rewrite this sentence?

Wish …. would; is it ok?. b’cause you want to stop raining…

Hi Valen. It’s a little bit confusing with me sometimes. I suppose to regret about something about the present, I have to say: “I wish [subj] [past tense]. To regret about something about the past: “I wish [subj] [past perfect]. Instead, if I want someone/something change and I’m just complaining about, I have to use “I wish [subj] would [inifinite]. Now, sometimes it’s not so different,, isn’t it? (I wish it stopped raining/I wish it would stop raining) Are both these forms correct? or am I wrong? Cheers
Hi Marco. Try to watch Adam´s lesson about “The subjunctive: I wish”.
When “wish” stands for a non-real situation you need to drop one tense back. Eg: (real: it´s rainy now) so: I wish it would be dry tomorrow. / I wish it would stop raining. / I wish the rain would stop.
Maybe I´m wrong, but that´s the way I got it.

valen, i think, was is grammatically incorrect with wish in hypothetical situation. would u plz clarify this?
How strange, theachers from the same Institute ( this website) teach different things:
One teaches that it isn’t supposed to be I wish I Was but just I wish I WERE ( if I remember right it was Adam), another teaches I wish I Was.
Perhaps, because one teacher is native, another not?
