In this English lesson, I cover the words WISH and HOPE — what they mean exactly, and how and when to use them properly. Don’t forget to take the free quiz to test your understanding of the lesson.
Hi, I woul like to know if your sentence is correct or not, you wrote I WISH I WAS RICH…….., but I know that one rule says that when you’re using wish to talk about things that you want to be true now, but that are not true you must use simple past after wish, but you have to use were instead of was after wish; so, your example should be I WISH I WERE RICH. I would like to know if I’m right or not. Thank you!!!
Hi,
You are right. You do use the simple past. “I wish I WERE rich” is correct. Thanks, hello!
Teacher, if you said so then the question 3 should be also like ‘I wish I were the boss of the company’ right
What you mention is the “subjunctive tense.” To express something imaginary, unreal, hypothetical…
A) I wish I were rich. I wish he were in Thailand. I wish she were my girlfriend.
The above is the formal, prescribed grammar… (they all express unreal or imaginary situations).
BUT, one can also say and hear:
B) I wish I was rich. I wish he was in Thailand. I wish she was my girlfriend.
Example (A) is prescribed, formal grammar (best for tests).
Example (B) is also used, even by native speakers. It is “wrong” only in the formal sense. It is “right” because native speakers say it all the time.
(A) I wish I were a better person.
versus
(B) I wish I was a better person.
Which is correct? For a test, (A) is correct. For everyday usage, either (A) or (B) is correct, BUT you will probably hear (B) more often.
This is simply because the subjunctive tense is not used by native speakers in some situations; maybe the subjunctive sounds strange [it does!], maybe it is going out of style [perhaps some day it will]…
For people like us (latins) this explanation is excelent. Thank you so much
thank you for your explanation.. i got you.. easily,,
actually, korean english teacher explained to me that
after Wish, i must put the past plural verb all the time like i were, he were, she were…
I wish all of us here were having a great contribution in learning English as a second language though it’s not our native language coz I’m from Asia still we understand the basic language which is love.
@ Jandym12, wow I like your simple and powerful explanation. word……
.. as what i have learned.. if you wish for sumthing which is impossible, you must use the simple past tense were. I WISH I WERE RICH.. IS THAT GRAMMATICALLY ACCEPTABLE..
Yes, lemie. It is the simple past. “I wish I were” is correct :)

Thanks! Good bye!

Dear Valen,
I would like to thank you and your team for facilitating us the easiest and effective way to improve our English. The lessons are really well understandable and helpful.
Wishing you more success.
hi how are you. i wish you are being in good health. i need your help in some thing i cant write it now ,so this my account in Skype add me “awalktoremember6″
Please help me to rewrite this sentence “She won’t visit me again.” => “I wish….”. “Won’t” means future, but if we talk about future we use hope. So, how can I rewrite this sentence?
Hi Valen, I like your explanation about “wish and hope”. I read the next …”He never help me with the dishes. I wish he would…”. Wish and then would, is for example, when you want or you like this person ( he ); changes. and he helps me with the dishes… For example, is it OK… you are at home, and it’s raining all day. and you think….”I wish it would stop raining…”. Wish …. would; is it ok?. b’cause you want to stop raining…
Hi miss Valen, I am a new studen, I come frome Viet Nam and i want to ask you how to study english well. I want to do it myself but i nedd your help. Please!
sorry Miss there are some works were wrong hic..hic
this is my first time gave the answer i hope i’m able to speaking .teacher more than give me kwonledge about english..thanks best wishing for you teacher..
Hi Valen. It’s a little bit confusing with me sometimes. I suppose to regret about something about the present, I have to say: “I wish [subj] [past tense]. To regret about something about the past: “I wish [subj] [past perfect]. Instead, if I want someone/something change and I’m just complaining about, I have to use “I wish [subj] would [inifinite]. Now, sometimes it’s not so different,, isn’t it? (I wish it stopped raining/I wish it would stop raining) Are both these forms correct? or am I wrong? Cheers
Hi Marco. Try to watch Adam´s lesson about “The subjunctive: I wish”.
When “wish” stands for a non-real situation you need to drop one tense back. Eg: (real: it´s rainy now) so: I wish it would be dry tomorrow. / I wish it would stop raining. / I wish the rain would stop.
Maybe I´m wrong, but that´s the way I got it.
Many thanks for your nice and great online teaching.I’m a teacher but not english teacher,my field is electronic ,teaching for mor than 20 years and I can daresay you are a great teacher. One question about this video . Shouldn’t we say ” I wish,I were rich .” and not was rich? I have in my mind that for I and it,we have to use were not was. Please let me know which one is correct?
thanks
I wish I were an English teacher who has the ability to pronounce `dot com` such a cute way like you, Miss (?) Valen :D
I hope I’ll hear that sentence-fragment just a slight-little bit more than I can save my physical and mental healthness :D
Hi Valen! i know that u ain”t offering private English lessons that is so sad ’cause i wish u would , by the way nice and useful lesson. hope u will write me back i think i am falling for u. i can not beleave that i am letting u know this . lol just kidding hope u ain’t buying this… Be good Valen.
Hi Valen. I got confused with the last sentence: “I´ve eaten too much. I wish I hadn´t”. Can present perfect + past perfect be together in the same scenario? I thought past perfect could be used only with simple past…

Hi,
You are right. You do use the simple past. “I wish I WERE rich” is correct. Thanks, hello!
Both are correct: I wish I was/were rich.
don’t i know it
thanks valen.i very very like you :”)
I wish I could find a job by studying you everyday lessons english Valen. Thank You Very much and God Bless you.
WAS is singular and WERE is plural.
I wish I was rich!
It makes sense to me
Bob
i like your way of speaking.
but there are some people says i wish i was rich but that”s wrong the right sentence is i wish i were rich right
yes. i love u teaching is good iD
that’s nice from you
if you’re mistake you must accept the mistake thanks for all…………..
Thank you so much
thank you for your explanation.. i got you.. easily,,
actually, korean english teacher explained to me that
after Wish, i must put the past plural verb all the time like i were, he were, she were…
thanks..

Thanks teacher you great i scored 4 out of 4.

I wish you get the best in life!
Thanks Dear Valen. I am your new student
Can i continue this Class for Ever?

Many thanks for your nice and great online teaching.I’m a teacher but not english teacher,my field is electronic ,teaching for mor than 20 years and I can daresay you are a great teacher. One question about this video . valen, i think, was is grammatically incorrect with wish in hypothetical situation. would u plz clarify this?
How strange, theachers from the same Institute ( this website) teach different things:
One teaches that it isn’t supposed to be I wish I Was but just I wish I WERE ( if I remember right it was Adam), another teaches I wish I Was.
Perhaps, because one teacher is native, another not?
Really Nice service you are doing to the English learners
