It helps to know how a given word functions in a sententence, but on other occasions don’t or rather it is not necessary to know it. The latter applies to today’s lesson.

For instance, I’m sure most of us use these two words correctly, but did not know how they both functioned in the text.

    Excellent lesson Rebecca.

    Thanks a lot.

I am happy because of you teacher ) . Thanks , good luck , take care of yourself .

Saturday, June 11th 2016

Thanks Rebecca!

This is an interesting topic to correct common mistakes in writing and speaking.

It’s correct to speak “I’m in trouble because of you”, right? (Is it) because “you” in this case is not a subject of any clause, but a simple noum?

Saturday, June 11th 2016

Yes, you can say, “I’m in trouble because of you.”
It’s a good thing you’re applying the principle. All the best to you.

    Sunday, July 10th 2016

I’m so happy when I get 100. I’m on cloud 9.
Rebecca, your grammar lessons are always, I’ve gotta say it again HELPFUL. Haha! I’ll stop being repetitive. Thank you again! :D

Could you do a lesson on the difference between KEEP ON and KEEP? I always get confused when to use them. Or if you want, just explain it to me right here on the comments. I appreciate it a lot.

Bye-bye!
See you! ;)

Saturday, June 11th 2016

‘keep on’ means to continue or persist in (doing something), for instance, ‘keep on running’; also, it means: to continue to wear; to continue to employ, for instance, ‘the firm kept on only ten men’; followed by about, it means to persist in talking; and followed by at, it means to nag (a person).
‘Keep’ has a lot of usages, for instance: To retain possession of: kept the change; must keep your composure; To have as a supply: keep spare parts in case of emergency; To provide (a family, for example) with maintenance and support: “There’s little to earn and many to keep” (Charles Kingsley); To support (a mistress or lover) financially; To put customarily; store: Where do you keep your saw?; To supply with room and board for a charge: keep boarders; To raise: keep chickens; To maintain for use or service: an urbanite who didn’t keep a car; To manage, tend, or have charge of: Keep the shop while I’m away; To preserve (food); To cause to continue in a state, condition, or course of action: tried to keep the patient calm; To maintain records in: keep a yearly diary; To enter (data) in a book: keep financial records; and finally, To detain: was kept after school. Source: thefreedictionary

    Tuesday, June 14th 2016

The verb keep, without the preposition ‘on’ when it is followed by ‘doing something’, has the same meaning of ‘keep on’, for instance: Claire and James kept talking even though their parents had politely asked them to keep quiet.

    Tuesday, June 14th 2016

I think so, but I’m not sure.

    Tuesday, June 14th 2016

Thank U Rebecca for this lesson!

Monday, June 13th 2016

Hi
Hope you are doing well madam
I would be glad if you could tell me what is the exact meaning of this sentence in English the sentence is ” was it a bad day or was it a bad five minutes that you milked all day ”
I exactly wanna know the meaning in what case do people use such this sentence and why for? Thanks in advance
I will impatiently be waitting for your answer

Tuesday, June 14th 2016

“To milk” literally means to squeeze milk from an animal like a cow, but figuratively it can mean to pressure someone for something, or to over-use something. For example, a cop might “milk” a suspect for information, or a comedian might “milk” a joke until it’s no longer funny. A common idiom is “milking it for attention”—exaggerating something to get people to pay attention to you. Have you ever seen a little child fall over and cry even though it’s not really hurt, because it wants its parents to fuss over it? “A bad five minutes that you milked all day” implies that you only had a short bad experience, but you let it ruin your day because you felt sorry for yourself.

This isn’t an idiom or a figure of speech—I had to Google it. It’s an inspirational quote—kind of like a proverb or saying, but newer (though we don’t usually know where it came from). It’s the kind of thing people pass around on social media because it motivates them to feel better.

    Hope this helps!

    Wednesday, June 15th 2016

Enjoy this . Thank you very much.
